Tumor is an abnormal tissue that grows by cellular proliferation more rapidly than normal and continues to grow after the oncogeneses stimuli that initiated the new growth cease. These cells transformed from normal cells with new inherited characters fail to differentiate the mature cells. It shows partial or complete lack of structural organization. 

In the past 40 years, with the clinical observation and laboratory investigation the experts of Chinese traditional medicine in China confirm that the effects of Chinese medicine on tumor treatment by its own or combined with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, biotherapy have achieved good results. More than that, the investigations for prevention and treatment of tumors with TCM and herbs have been promoted from the macroscopic to the molecular level, i.e. the researches of the effects of TCM and herbs on the tumor cells and oncogenes have gotten achievements in both the laboratory work and clinical applications.
 

The effects and application of Chinese herbs on tumors: 

(1). Treatment for inducing tumor cells to apoptosis: Apoptosis is the process of cell life cycle controlled by genes to maintain the stableness of intra-environment of the body. It is also called programmed death. Anti-cancer gene P53 can accelerate and oncogene BCL-2 can suppress the apoptosis process. Cells are controlled by the two kinds of genes. The imbalance of these control genes will change the incidence of tumor, the survival ability and the toleration to anti-cancer medicine of body. The herbs with the effect of regulating and controlling these genes or reducing the activity of telomerase will suppress the activity and express of the oncogenes, and interfere the growth, metabolism, and proliferation of the tumor cells, finally target the apoptosis of tumor cells.
 

(2). Herbal Photodynamic therapy (PDT):
Some herbs have the effect of photodynamic suppressive reaction on tumor cells. These kinds of herbal photosensitizer dose not only kill the tumor cells also have the effect of anti-cancer and strengthen the body resistance.
 

(3). Herbal treatment to induce tumor cells to differentiate mature cells
Tumor cells are the partial differentiated immature cells. Some herbs can induce the tumor cells to differentiate to normal or near to normal mature cells and make tumor cells lose their malignant characters. From the cell level of view, this effect also is a treatment of strengthening the body resistance.
 

(4). Effects of herbs on tumor cell membrane:
Cell membrane is the site where the cells receive the signals and exchange material from the outside of the cells. Some herbs can increase the sensitivity of tumor cells to anti-cancer drugs and change the biochemical characters of tumor cell membrane, so can be used to treat tumor diseases.
 

(5). Herbs inhibiting the vasoformation of tumors: 

Tumors are not only get rich nutrition by their vessels from the host also output massive malignant cells by the vessels to the host resulting in tumors growth and metastasis continuously. Some herbs or their effective elements have the effects of inducing Interferon (INF) and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF), and kill the tumor cells directly or indirectly, inhibiting tumor growth and its vasoformation.
 

(6). Herbs combined with chemotherapy to treat tumors:
This kind of treatment not only reduces toxic and side effects of anti-cancer drugs and increases the complete rate of chemotherapy promotes the growth and metabolism of normal cells, also enhances the stimulation and protection to the hemopoietic function of bone marrow, regulates the immunity of the body, accelerates the transference of T lymphocytes, strengthens the activities of NK cells and increases the formation of antibodies resulting in anti-cancer and inhibiting cancer effects.
