Treatment Scope > Ophthalmology > Iridocyclitis
Clinically it is manifested as pain of eyes, ciliary congestion, edema and exudation of iris, shrink of pupil, loss of round shape and low vision.
Etiology:
1. Exogenic factor: due to eye injury or stimulation from toxic chemicals.
2. Secondary factor: due to the inflammation spread from adjacent tissue such as keratitis and scleritis.
3. Endogenic factor: eye allergic reaction. Patients often have a history of rheumatic, rheumatoid and other self-allergic reaction diseases.
Clinical manifestations:
At the beginning of the disease there are photophobia, lacrimation, dragging pain of the eyeball, blurred vision, even vision severely descent. There is cilliary congestion around cornea, severe one with mixture congestion of eyeball, the deposit at the posterior wall of cornea, and the aqueous humor with opacity, fibrin exudated from pupil area even hypopyon or hyphema, iris swollen, pupil seclusion or pupilar membrane seclusion. It is often that secondary glaucoma develops due to obstruction of aqueous humor circulation. If repeated recurrence or prolonged course, it will complicate with lens opacity. At advanced stage, the lower intraocular pressure may cause eyeball atrophy and finally resulting in blindness.
Etiology and pathogenesis explained in TCM:
1. Wind heat in liver channel
2. Excessive heat in spleen and lung
3. Damp heat in spleen channel
Treatment principle:
To disperse wind, calm liver and clear damp heat, remove stasis, anti-inflammation and regulate immune function.
According the above principle, we combine the herbal modern pharmacology with differentiation of diagnosis and treatment, to regulate pituitary-adrenal gland system, strengthen adrenocortical function, control inflammation rapidly, increase vision and avoid using massive cortical hormone. With regulating the immune function, the episode rate is decreased; the damage to eyeball tissue is reduced with each episode and vision quality is improved.
